Who’s the technical partner of NASA to help provide internet on the moon?

Well, this big project definitely needs big hands, NASA has selected the Finnish telecom giant – Nokia as its partner to achieve this goal. And Nokia without a doubt is all pumped up to establish internet on the moon after bagging the $14.1 million project.

The duo has set a target to establish a 4G LTE base station on the lunar surface by 2022 under the most ambitious Artemis program.

It means that the moon will have an active 4G connectivity before 3.9 billion people could get internet connectivity on earth.

Finnish telecom’s U.S research arm, Bell Labs will be supplying all the required equipment to NASA for the project.

“Leveraging a rich and successful history in space technologies, from pioneering satellite communication to discovering the cosmic microwave background radiation produced by the Big Bang, we are now building the first-ever cellular communications network on the moon,” said Marcus Weldon, the President, and Chief Technology Officer at Nokia Bell Labs.

The company has also said that it has plans to build 5G internet on the moon.

The 4G connectivity will enable the astronauts to command and control probes and sophisticated devices with ease, instant transfer of data, and also allow to make voice calls and live video calls.

The U.S space agency is gradually erecting the scaffold for its plan to establish a permanent human colony on the moon and finally head to Mars under its most ambitious Artemis Program.

“The system could support lunar surface communications at greater distances, increased speeds, and provide more reliability than the current standard,” NASA said in a report.

This landmark deal with NASA to provide internet on the moon is a major strike for Nokia as it has been in tough competition with Sweden’s Ericsson, China’s Huawei, and other big companies for the growing 5G contracts.

If everything goes as planned, Nokia will be the 1st company to establish internet connectivity on the moon.
