James Webb Telescope: World’s Most Powerful Telescope off to Space

James Webb Telescope :

How far can one’s naked eyes see, one mile, two miles, or to simply put in the scientific point of view we can see stars that are glowing from millions of light-years away as tiny white dots in the night sky.

Well, what if we can look beyond…? Beyond with a clear picture to understand what’s happening in the universe!

The revolution in space technology has made us see beyond what we could imagine, with powerful telescopes on earth and in space (Hubble Space Telescope), our species has got a chance to look at other galaxies, black holes, birth and death of stars.

And now NASA joining hands with European Space Agency [ESA], Canadian Space Agency [CSA], and other members have launched the most advanced and most expensive telescope ever built – James Webb Telescope.

The James Webb Telescope is the fruit of 30 years of intense research.

It was launched onboard Ariane 5 on December 25, 2021, at 12.20 pm GMT (7.20 am EST) at Europe’s spaceport, French Guiana.

Jane Rigby, the operations project scientist for Webb at NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Maryland, expressed how it was during the launch in NASA’s press report.

“The mood is nervous, excited, and ready. I hear laughter in the hallways and see grim eyes over KN95 marks. We know that if the future of NASA is at stake, how audaciously hard the task will be, we know how many times we rehearsed. Now we do it for real.”

How powerful is the James Webb Telescope?

With a whopping $10 billion investment, James Webb Telescope is the most expensive telescope ever built.

This space telescope weighs about 14,000 pounds (6,350 kilograms), about the size of a school bus, and its sun-shield stretches to about 22 meters by 12 meters (69.5 ft x 46.5 ft), when fully spread, the James Webb Telescope measures as big as a tennis court.

The Webb Telescope’s design is unusual compared to the Hubble Telescope.  Although the James Webb Telescope is called the successor of the Hubble Telescope, it isn’t out there to replace it.

It’s because they are built to cover different types of light, however, the James Webb telescope will provide insight into a part of the light spectrum that Hubble never had.

James Webb Telescope’s mission is to solve the mysteries in our solar system, find the origins of our universe, find distant worlds around stars, and probe the unexplained structures.

This space telescope will be set at the Earth-Sun L2 Lagrange point which is around 1.5 million kilometers further away from our star (the sun) than our planet (earth) is (This is 3 times further than the Hubble telescope which orbits the earth at an altitude of 570km).

The position and the most advanced design of JWST will enable scientists to see back to around 13.7 billion years ago, which is almost the time of the beginning of the universe.
